The University of Chicago Medical Center's Office of Business Diversity has a specific focus on the wide range of professional services utilized in the strategic and day to day operations of the Medical Center. Due to the nature with which professional services firms are contracted, our office has designed specific strategies to assure that certified minority- and women-owned firms have access to and are able to earn professional service contract awards.
One specific example is the Business Diversity Symposium model launched in 2008. Through this vehicle, our office connects UCMC leadership in human resources, marketing & communication, legal, finance, and information technology to some of the best and brightest diverse firms around the country. As a result more than 20 firms have received or expanded business with the Medical Center. In 2009 & 2010 we collaborated with our colleagues from the University and incorporated Architects and Engineers courtesy of the Medical Center's Construction Compliance Team.
The Business Diversity Manager works directly with the leadership of human resources, information technology, central administration, legal, finance, marketing / communication, etc. to determine the specific UCMC needs and then actively identifies and connects certified minority- and women-owned firms to UCMC decision-makers for consideration. Successful firms are then managed and developed to assure the UCMC requirements are being met and for consideration of incremental business.
